Kindahlichii Chapter Head Start Building
Indigenous Design Studio + Architecture (IDS+A) was selected to provide A/E services for a new Head Start Center for children of the Kin Dah Lichii Community. A/E Services included: Master Planning, Boundary + Topographic Survey, Geotechnical Engineering, Schematic Design, Design Development and Construction Documents. The new 3,000 square foot, one (1) classroom Head Start will replace the current one and will accommodate approximately 20 children, ages 3-5 years old. The Master Plan addressed the community’s need for spaces that allow all generations to come together, promote healthier lifestyles, and provide opportunities for teaching and learning. Included within the master plan development was the new Head Start building with an adjacent play area and parking, outdoor recreation space, a multi-purpose building, community garden, vendor market, hogan, and an outdoor gathering space expansion for the Chapter House. The focus of the new Head Start building was to improve children’s well-being, introduce foundations of the Navajo language, learning, and promote interactive educational experiences, in addition to actively involving parents in their children’s learning. The design of the new Head Start draws inspiration from Navajo Design & Planning Principles and a balance between traditional and contemporary; the overarching concepts that emerged were 1) family and phases of life, 2) home, as protection, permanence, strength, knowledge, 3) importance of place and connection to history/ tradition, 4) beginnings and development.
